About the technology

Biosoil uses bioremediation to degrade organic pollutants found in hazardous waste, originating from a variety of clients in the industry, in an economically efficient manner.

About the technology

Bioremediation is the process by which microorganisms degrade complex organic compounds into simpler ones. Microorganisms use the organic compounds for increasing their biomass or as part of their respiration process.

Biosoil uses bioremediation to degrade organic pollutants found in hazardous waste, originating from  a large variety of clients in the Israeli industry, in an environmental and economically efficient manner. The hazardous waste treatment process is considered complete either upon achievement of threshold levels allowing the reuse and recycling of the waste as raw material, or upon obtaining levels allowing the landfilling of the waste at the hazardous substances landfill, located at Neot Hovav.

The Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection has adopted and applies the criteria and procedures for the acceptance of waste at landfills as established by the European Council Directive for landfills (EC/2003/33).

In soil contamination cases, bioremediation can be applied in a number of ways: Once contaminated soil is excavated, on-site bio-treatment can be used for treating the soil in a nearby facility.

Alternatively, soil can be brought to a designated-certified treatment facility, such as the one operated by Biosoil at the Neot-Hovav facility, for ex situ treatment. In the event which contaminated soil cannot be excavated and removed for treatment, the contamination may be remediated by the introduction of oxygen materials into the soil using forced air to encourage microbial activity. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus may also be added to the soil in order to achieve optimal conditions for microorganisms active in the degradation process (In situ treatment).

The facilities operated by Biosoil at Neot-Hovav are based on Bio-Pile technology – within which Biosoil operates for the creation and maintenance of stable optimal environmental conditions necessary for the maximization of the microorganisms’ activity. Defined and appropriate levels of humidity, pH, temperature and oxygen are maintained, mainly by regulating oxygen, nutrients and liquid substances at the amount and of the type required for maximizing aerobic activity in the Bio-Pile.

The advantages of the technology

The advantages of the technology

It is Ecological – Bioremediation uses natural processes, permitting degradation of toxic organic elements into non-toxic substances while obviating the need to invest energy.

It is Economically Effective – Energy required to be invested within the bio-treatment is significantly lower when compared to alternative treatments, such as incineration and oxidization thus incurring much lower costs.

For these reasons the biological treatment process is recognized worldwide as an environmental process which enjoys advantages allowing it to be much more cost-effective compared to other treatment technologies.

Biosoil’s treatment facilities

Admission Facility

Biosolids and oily sludge sent for treatment at our plant are initially transferred to, at our Admission Facility, a sealed facility designed to cater for emissions. In this facility, Sludge is subject to various processes, which guarantee that physical conditions required for onset of treatment are met. Upon obtaining the desired characteristics and once emission of air pollutants complies with the appropriate standards, the Sludge is transferred for further treatment at the various facilities available to Biosoil, operating with various advanced technologies adjacently to the Admission Facility.

Forced Aeration Facility

A aeration system is located at the base of the waste pile, comprised of a set of pipes, which filter and monitor emissions in a controlled manner. Similarly to the mechanical ventilation system, the forced aeration technology allows for the optimal oxygen levels required for the activity of microorganisms. Some of the many advantages of this technology are, for instance, a larger acceptance capacity of waste in a given space and the possible automation of most treatment cycles.

Mechanical Aeration Facility

In this facility heavy engineering equipment is used to provide microorganismswith optimal oxygen levels, necessary for maintaining an effective degradation process. Thus, aerobic conditions are preserved, assuring that no toxic gases or unpleasant odors are released into the air and that the treatment continues at the desired speed. Another benefit of mechanical ventilation is the improvement of overall physical characteristics and homogeneity of Sludge, resulting in increased productivity of the treatment process.

The waste we treat

Biosolids

Biosolids treated in our facilities are by-products of biological treatment of industrial runoff. This kind of sludge is characterized by the presence of a substantial active community of microorganisms.  Biosoil receives sludge of wastewater treatment facilities from a large variety of industrial plants, resulting in high diversity of the waste contaminant composition. Considering these initial conditions, the reduction of the organic material to threshold levels allowing the landfilling of the sludge indicate proven and high technological capacity.

Oily Sludge

Typically the by-product of oil and petroleum refineries. This kind of sludge normally contains relatively high rates of organic components, high concentration of toxic metals and a low concentration of microorganisms. These traits make Oily Sludge treatment complex and unique.  Throughout its years of activity, Biosoil has treated thousands of tons of sludge originating from varied industrial sources while creating for its clients an efficient and cost effective alternative, compared to the more "traditional" solutions.

Polluted Soil

Biosoil has been receiving at its facilities contaminated soil for treatment of a large variety of organic pollutants. Biosoil has gained unique unprecedented expertise in Israel in all matters pertaining to the treatment of contaminated soil, through the extensive experience accumulated thereby in the treatment of complex organic pollutants. Contaminated soil treatment process involves innovative technologies, some of which were developed by Biosoil itself, aimed at improving process efficiency and reducing treatment cycle’s duration. Upon completion of the treatment thereof, soil is re-used as a substitute for new raw material consumed in waste treatment procedures at the ESC facilities. Some of our clients include the leading refineries, fuel companies, real-estate constructors and Industrial manufacturers in Israel.

Industrial Waste Waters

Biosoil accepts contaminated wastewaters for treatment from industrial clients, with a high concentration of organic components and are uses the same within the various treatment processes at our facilities. The synergy of our treatment processes with the utilization of industrial wastewaters allows us to offer clients economically effective alternatives compared to traditional treatment solutions.
